Traveling Sketchbook

"Homecoming"
Ellen Sereda

Dinah has arranged a sketchbook exchange, and here's my 1st sketch on it's way to Brigette in Australia. A crow, of course, but look a snail too, I do like my references to be close by. I was going to draw a slug, but they grow jumbo size here in BC and frankly, I find them scary.

though don't look if you don't like spiders!

I just love this: from your use of colour to the interesting, quirky composition to your line quality. Do more like this!

Caroline: thanks, and great photo, but I had no idea spiders eat snails? do they really or is it just tormenting it? (I actually like spiders, but not if they touch me, then I scream like a banshee)

Andrea: thanks. But right after posting it, I couldn't help thinking the right half looks like some kind of spoof snail version of Andrew Wyeth's, "Christina's World". Don't you think?

Thanks for posting this, as I have to wait "four more stops" before it gets to me!
Andrew Wyeth?Hmm...I must go back and look again.

Dinah: I'm a little late with it but ready for Katie's when it arrives.

The key word with Wyeth I meant was 'spoof', something about the snail looking to the house in the distance. I remember back in the 80's when the poster of "Christina's World" was all the rage, my friend had it hanging in her apartment, it's stuck with me.

I would never claim anything close to Wyeth's talent or draughtmanship. Although, I'd love to have his technical abilities.

I looked more closely and I CAN see what you mean. It's the similarity of angle/distance and the very spare colour.
Gees! Doesn't this dissection detract from one's enjoyment!!
(Of course, being me, I just loved the crow, whatever else was in there!)

Dinah: I work with too many random connections in my brain. And now I have to start on sketch #2, as Katie Jane's just arrived in the post. Thanks for including me in this exchange, it's great fun.
