Books, Comics and the Big Purge

Talented cartoonist and illustrator Patricia Storms of Booklust had a Valentine’s draw for this book and lucky me won a copy. I’m excited to receive it, I love her work. She writes a sassy comic strip called Art Imitating Lit. There I came across this great comic strip about 2 of my favorite authors, Michael Chabon and Jonathan Lethem. Her strip is bang on - these are thinking boy writers for thinking boy readers. Since I’m a girl, I feel like a minority. These writers are the reason I can’t find a book club I want to join in suburbia. They just don’t seem to resonate with the mainstream female population. I do love them and if I was single, my only big criteria in a man would be a love for the works of Chabon and Lethem. That and regular bathing, oh, and no dismembered relatives in the basement freezer (that’s me! simple girl with simple tastes). Although, my husband hasn’t read these authors and shows no interest, I’m just going to PRETEND it’s because he’s too busy and if he did, I’m going to PRETEND he’d love them, because a good dose of PRETEND keeps a marriage strong.

Sadly, the only reading I’m allowing myself lately is a book on home organization. I’m not retaining anything from the writing, I’m only lusting after the photos of stark white minimalist rooms. I fantasize about living in a room of crisp, white linen and natural wood and of course, those huge sunlit windows looking out to scenic acres of all my land. First, I would have to get rid of the dogs, cat, hamster, kids, husband and myself with my nasty ‘paper piling’ habit. Which would leave an uninhabited bare room . Ping! Back to reality.

Truthfully, I am content looking out my smudgy windows onto the asphalt roofs of endless suburban boxes. I do need to be more organized though, so it's time for a big purge. I have made progress. I have rid myself of much clutter. Unfortunately, I’m still on my clunky old computer and unable to post photos of my progress, namely my 6 garbage bags of shame. When I’m done, I want these duster slippers. They seem to be a step up the laziness scale, just above the robotic floor sweeper I’m putting on my Christmas list. Hey, thanks for the mention! And I guess I'll be adding to your clutter, by sending you that book....hee hee!

Those slippers are crazy! And that web site? I'd love to have my home spotless, too (and we don't even have kids!) but I gotta be honest – the people who live like that are freakin' anal!!

Both my husband and I LOVE Michael Chabon! Though I have to admit we're sadly behind on his books. He's an amazing writer. I'll have to check out Jonathan Lethem, and Art Imitating Lit.

If you haven't read it yet, do read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (Chabon), which might also be an excellent introduction to his writing for you husband. There's a little bit of everything in that book.

I've seen a similar product to those slippers at Archie McPhee. They call them "Savvy Bachelor Mop Shoes". If I had more floor and less carpet, I'd definitely be looking into getting me a pair too. Too bad there isn't some sort of Savvy Bachelor product for home organization - I could use that too. :)

I have primose-painted walls, all the better to show the mouldy spots!Still, when the kittens climb the curtains they do remove a fair layer of dust...

Patricia: Looking forward to your book! Books are never clutter to me!I agree, a perfectly organized life every day seems a bit tedious. Certainly doesn't bode well with all us right brained arty types.

Angela: My copy of "Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" is completely dogeared with all my lending out and trying to get converts. I LOVE that book! Hubby won't bite though. He'll have to wait for the movie, which has been in preproduction for years. They can't seem to get a good working script, which makes sense, it's so dense and epic. Chabon thinks Natalie Portman would make a perfect Rosa, I could see that.

"Savvy Bachelor Mop Shoes"? I'd buy them for the name alone.

I'm convinced. Can I borrow your copy of Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay or will I love it so much that I really should invest in my own?

Andrea - I'll bring you my copy next time I see you. But now, I'm feeling that slight paranoia when something's been REALLY built up to be great. I've lent this book out to 5 people, 3 couldn't get past the first 50 pages, the other 2 put it on their list as their favorite books of all time. What a hit or miss it is.
